Challenge
On the TownePlace Suites project, Lee's pipefitting crew worked across multiple active zones simultaneously — mechanical rooms, above-ceiling cavities, and vertical pipe chases spread across different floors. As installation progressed in step with other trades, the foreman needed consistent contact with a crew that was rarely in the same place at the same time.
The building itself made that difficult. Reinforced concrete, enclosed mechanical spaces, and the vertical separation between floors created conditions where cellular signal was unreliable precisely where the pipefitting work was most concentrated. In a multi-trade hotel construction environment where sequencing depends on real-time coordination, gaps in jobsite communication carried direct risk to the workflow.



Solution
Lee Contracting equipped its eight-person pipefitting crew with Retevis RT29 long-range two-way radios as the primary communication system for the TownePlace Suites project. Each crew member carried a unit paired with a shoulder speaker mic for hands-free communication during active installation work.
Maintaining Coverage Through the Building's Enclosed Spaces
Mechanical rooms, above-ceiling spaces, and vertical pipe chases are environments where cellular signal consistently falls short — and where Lee's crew was most active on this project. The RT29's high-power UHF signal improved in-building coverage through these concrete block and closed structural conditions, giving the foreman reliable contact across the building's most signal-resistant spaces. When a pipe run on an upper floor needed rerouting mid-shift, the foreman reached the affected crew members immediately — redirecting the team without delay.
Running a Private Channel Across a Multi-Trade Construction Site
On a hotel build running multiple trades in parallel, radio traffic from other crews on the same site can create noise and confusion at exactly the moments when clear communication matters most. The RT29's programmable channels and privacy codes gave Lee's pipefitting crew a dedicated line — separate from any other trade operating on the same frequency range. The foreman's transmissions reached his own crew clearly, without cross-talk from surrounding teams, keeping coordination focused and communication clean across a busy, multi-trade construction site.
Staying Connected Without Stopping the Work
Pipefitting demands both hands and sustained attention. With a shoulder speaker mic and VOX enabled, crew members could transmit simply by speaking — no button to reach for, no pause in the work. Whether fitting pipe overhead or working inside a tight ceiling cavity, every crew member stayed reachable throughout the shift without interrupting what they were doing.
Results
With the RT29 system in place, Lee Contracting maintained stable jobsite radio communication across its pipefitting crew throughout the project — including in the enclosed and multi-floor environments where cellular connectivity had been unreliable.
From a cost perspective, deploying a fleet of eight purpose-built long-range construction radios represents a practical investment relative to the disruption that communication gaps can introduce on a multi-trade site — where a delay in one workstream has the potential to affect the schedule across every trade working in parallel.
