Power Switch Fault and Hazard
  • The power switch of the Ailunce HD1 seems to be a soft-switch not a true power switch. It can be tricked into powering up the radio in an off position. The radio will be on and you might believe it was off. This can cause the radio to be in your pocket and potentially transmitting and interfering with other station. The battery could get hot while stored and create a fire hazard. I have contacted Retevis in regard to this issue and they dismissed the case. Please test your radio and make sure it is off when turned off!!

Almost perfect ...
  • While this radio is definitely a step forward for amateur radio DMR hardware, there are some noticeable issues and limitations, and some feature currently lacking but hopefully available in the future.

    1) Receiver Sensitivity: for a 10w radio, with great long range outreach, it has a very poor sensitivity for the returning weak signals from such range. they can hear you, but you can't hear them!!! at about .30microV it puts this radio to very cheap receiver standards. This is made even worse but a very sharp, low sensitivity squelch.

    2) GPS features are primitive: Why not implementing auto switching or location of nearest channel based on the channel and radio coordinates? This would be a jewel and a deal breaker for a lot of traveling radio enthusiasts and could be used for locating nearby radio in simplex.

    3) The display is on the dim side outdoors.

    4) The programmable keys are lacking options. Zone could be added to allow quick Zone change without using the menu and many other options could be used but are not listed.

    5) Missing a simple audio out or a simple audio in/out adapter to use with sound card or other devices.

    6) Missing a small Bluetooth module?

    7) Was the programming software developed by a student? So many bugs and issues it is ridiculous!
Please opensource and we'll get you a nice software rolling!!!

Overall a nice radio but not perfect and yet, soooo close....
Please Retevis/Ailunce, work on the firmware or opensource it so we can do it!!!

  • Overall sturdiness and finishing, capabilities and potentials
  • Receiver Sensitivity, Display brightness, firmware and programming software bugs
  • Cost effective, good for outdoors
  • Not yet where it should be. Potentially perfect, but lacking in key items

Very rugged DMR radio!
  • The HD1 GPS has been a solid radio for me in terms of ruggedness. It truly lives up to its IP67 rating as I actually submerged it in water for 30 minutes. The HD1 seems to be very tough. I accidentally dropped it from about 30 feet onto concrete and it kept on working. The battery did pop off but I put it back on and it kept on going. I've used it for both repeater communication and in simplex mode. No reports of bad audio or breakups. Programming from the keypad is actually quite easy once you get use to it. The programming software is functional but could use some updates. I'm sure it will mature in time. The display is a bit dim for my taste when in direct sunlight so hopefully this is addressed in future firmware updates. The GPS is very accurate and I hope Retevis develops an SDK so we can create some mapping software. Overall I think it's a great radio and Retevis has been responsive to feedback from users, fixing bugs, etc.
  • Rugged, great battery life, Analog and DMR
  • Wish there was an SDK available to allow the creations of custom software for GPS mapping
  • waterproof, Battery, Rugged, size, dual band, Analog
  • minor glitches and bugs

The best Handie I have ever used!
  • I have been blown away by this radio!

I have had this radio for a couple of weeks and I can honestly say that it is amazing! The build quality is unbelievable, its so well made, you really could abuse this radio and have no issues whatsoever.

I love that you can change the boot image on the radio and have included my YouTube video showing how you can do this.

The battery life is amazing! I can leave this radio without charge for days without any issues and the fact that it is waterproof is a real bonus for using outdoors!

I did a Full written review and have taken loads of pictures here:

If you are thinking about buying this radio I highly recommend going for it! It is by far the best Handheld transceiver I've ever owned!

  • Lots of things, mainly impressed with the battery and build quality!

Game Changer
  • Over all I think the Ailunce HD1- GPS is going to be a homerun for the Amateur Radio operators. Ailunce has been listeing to input from Amateur Operators and producing a product specifically for the Amateur community. The radio is FCC type accepted and usable on the commercial bands as well but it is designed and evolving into a really great HT for the Amateurs. It's ability to be programmed via the key pad and it's commercial feel make it a hit. The three power settings make it usable around town or in the back country. The programming software is easy and intuitive. A great product I think you will be seeing plenty of on the market.
  • Keypad programing.
    3 options of Power output.
    Full time promiscuous mode.
  • Dim display. Very hard to read in sunlight.
    Low audio in analog mode.
  • Price, keypad programming, designed for the Amateur Operator.
  • Dim Display, low audio in analog mode

Excellent radio
  • I received this radio to do a review on. I don't do a lot of import radios like this because usually the quality is poor. This radio is far from that. If I was blind folded and someone handed me the radio I probably would have thought it was a Motorola radio. Very solidly built. I did a complete tear down on it and internal build quality is as good as it is on the outside. Good quality silicone gaskets to make it waterproof. Heavy duty cast internal heat sink that makes the radio extremely rigid. Output power was as advertised and radio had very good receive sensitivity considering it is a direct conversion receiver. Overall I would give it a double thumbs up and recommend it.

Another Good DMR Radio for Amateur Radio (from this company)
  • Usually when I review a new DMR radio it takes me awhile because every time there is a learning curve, with software and firmware. But with the Ailunce HD1, this was very fast. I received the radio on Thursday and two days later the full review was online. This is a good indicator of that the HD1 his “ham-friendly”. I also really enjoyed the fact that I could upload the full list of DMR IDs into it, very easily.

I like the fact that it as an “Infinite” tuning knob on top for scrolling the menu and to change memories / channels. Another good feature is that you can access the menu even if you are receiving a signal.

You can watch my full video review on YouTube. Please note that there is also a French version of the video.

Good radio that's fun to use. Many features for the price.
  • Good build quality. Nice dual band features. Useful display.
I like that I can load the entire USA DMR-MARC user database at one time.
No limit of 16 channels per zone! I can now set up one codeplug for multiple states or regions.

I would like the radio to add the following features:
    - Bluetooth audio in/out
    - Ability to rapidly change zones from the programmable buttons.

The programming software (version 1.68) does not allow opening of multiple codeplugs to copy and paste between them. I would also suggest adding the ability to sort by frequency or channel alias to make finding duplicates easier.
  • Good build quality
    Dual band rx/tx
    Very good tx/rx audio.
    Great display
    Ability to load 100,000 contacts.
No limit to the number of channels in a zone.
    Programming software included.
  • No external audio output without external microphone plug.
    No bluetooth.
  • Good build quality, reasonable price, good audio, rapid response to online questions
  • No external audio output without external microphone, no bluetooth capability
