This Retevis ht is great for short distant communication up to 1 mile. battery life was on for a full day in stand by and talk time was long to keep in touch with family members. YouTube video has a review on how to change Cts/DcS code for private talk so others don’t listen.

I like everything about these little radios except for the fact that it does not come with a programming cable. The build quality is top notch, no complaints there. The battery life is excellent, far better than anything you find in a blister pack. The dedicated NOAA button on the side was a pleasant surprise, had not expected that, even an alarm/distress button on top. These are going to work out well for outings such as hiking, camping, 4 wheeling, and even multi vehicle road trips that go through areas of poor cell coverage. The programming software is fairly straight forward and should be easy for most folks to use.

As a beginner to GMRS I purchased the RB17P as a pair for my first radios. Found them quite difficult to program and very little information online about them. The program Retevis lists on their website for programming these radios is incorrect and outdated and these radios will NOT connect to any repeater out the box but will communicate with other GMRS radios easily and hear other standard GMRS channels. I had to contact Retevis through facebook to get the correct program emailed to me, after which I was able to correctly program this radio to repeaters. I was only able to hear the confirmation beep from the repeater on the stock antenna, with the occasional uniteligible voice heard. The repeater is 10 miles away from me, 20ft off the ground essentially on other side of my large city with many buildings between. I replaced the antenna with a cheap 15 inch folding antenna off amazon, after which was able to make and recieve repeater transmissions clearly from my home. After figuring out the programming it furns out to be easy to use, has a long battery life and good range in the city with repeaters. Its a darn good radio for the price if you are willing to be patient with getting the right programming and learning how to use it.

Very well made, easy to operate. I only give it 4 stars because the Retevis manufacturer puts codes on their radios so that they can only communicate with other Retevis. The good thing is that the application to program these radios is available and the codes can be erased or changed, and thus they can communicate with radios of other brands.

Great GMRS handheld radio for the entire family

I was looking for another pair of FCC Part 95 legal GMRS radios I can use while hiking or biking with my family. The RB17P caught my eye because it is a good looking radio that has all the features I would need, including support for GMRS repeaters. The battery life on these is phenomenal and I love the fact that I can just charge them on any USB outlet, or off a battery bank I use to charge my cell phones when traveling. It feels very robust with no flexing or squeaking. The battery sits super firm as if it were part of the housing. Sound quality is surprisingly good when speaking directly into the microphone that is located right at the bottom, a little below the "OK" button. When talking simplex, it cuts off the static at the end of a transmission, which makes it really easy on the ears. This does not work when talking through a repeater, but it is also not that bad. It supports digital and analog repeater tones that can be changed on the fly through the menu and using the little programmable button on the side. The software is similar to many other radios in this price range, but since it is for GMRS use only and it comes with all the FRS and GMRS channels preprogrammed, it is not even really needed. All channels, including the simplex channels, are preconfigured with an analog tone for RX and TX. Make sure you turn off the RX tone when you use your local repeater or you won't be able to hear the other station.

05/01/22 I bought the Retevis RB17P about 2 months ago and I am very pleased with it. Here are my thoughts: 1. The build quality is much better than I expected considering the price. 2. The display is larger than some other GMRS radios and the ability to change colors is useful in different lighting. It was for these reasons that I decided to purchase the RB17P. I suffer from eyesight problems and was hoping this display would prove beneficial for me. It has! 3. Although you cannot change from narrow band to wide band or vice versa on the radio itself, you can do so from the software available from Retevis. Also, much to my surprise, with the programing software you can not only modify the standard 30 preprogramed channels, but you have another 98 channels available to program any way you see fit, including being able to program multiple repeater frequencies with different tones/codes in any order you want. 4. The 2200 mah battery has more capacity than usual. 5. It comes with a standard desk charger, but the cable from the charger is USB, so you have more options to charge the battery. Thomas A.
