I am very satisfied with my recently purchased RT29S radio. I like it not just one aspect, but the whole radio. I appreciate its design, but more importantly, its functionality. I really like the ability to select the power level as needed, which extends the already excellent battery life. Its menu is quite comprehensive, although some functions (such as the alarm) are not very useful to me.
If you order the US and Canada version you will get the Canadian version that is 406-430Mhz and 450-470Mhz and as of this review it can't be unlocked. I am currently waiting to see if they are going to come out with the software or firmware to be able to unlock it. I have ran power tests on the radio and it is close to the claimed 10w on high, 5w on medium, and .25-.3w on low. I also checked the antenna on the SWR meter and it is actually pretty good in all the bands I checked. The transmitted audio is awesome if you use compandering and denoise with the mic gain turned to high. Even on low it sounds good but I think it is better on high. The radio shell is built rugged and solid like the HA1G/HA1UV and feels good in the hand. Speaker quality is good and loud enough. I wish the keyboard buttons were a little bigger but it's not a deal breaker. I do like the dark screen with the colored fonts much better than the screens like on my HA1G which are too bright in dark circumstances. I did try the programming software but when trying to read the radio it wanted a password. I didn't figure it out and support never told me since they were probably going to ship me the EU version if they don't have a fix for the UHF band problem. All in all it seems like a solid radio but they REALLY need to ship the EU version for the USA buyers since they always wind up unlocked anyway. I don't understand why you would want a dual band radio in the US that is not able to tune 430-450Mhz which is the major portion of the 70cm band. I hope Retevis reads this and starts shipping the EU version for the US like it should have been. Anyway, that's my take on the RT29S so I hope I save you a lot of trouble. I plan to edit this when we figure it all out.
