I purchased this radio to use with an Arrow handheld Yagi antenna to work the FM satellites (ISS, Tevels, SO-50) and used OpenGD-77 firmware with it. So far I am having a great time talking to other HAM operators through the SATs with this HT! I recommend it!
excellent product
Very happy with the solid feel and flawless operation of this unit
Love this little HT. Band coverage and overall functionality are good. Programing software is better than most.
Highly recommend! Best DMR radio for the money.
HIGH quality handheld radio.
transmit perfectly fine, and the transmitted audio sounded great
As for the radio, itself, I really like it. This is a basic, minimalist DMR radio that works with both digital and analog transmissions.
Great little radio
For the price it works. Just take a little time with the program and you'll get
If you’re looking for a cheap DMR capable radio under $100, this is the one
This is my second Retevis and this RT3S performs very well. The battery life is good and the radio is easy to program.
The radio itself is great. Once I rid it of the factory firmware and installed open gd77 it was good to go. I like it enough to where I've bought a few of them.
Easy to program and is my every day radio
Build quality is good. Lots of digital functionality that would normally cost you $300 or more. Programming is typical of these radios and may take a bit to learn. USB-C charging would be nice but for this price, I'm happy with the included charge cradle.
I immediately downloaded the opengd77 firmware and I can’t put this radio down. With it, I can listen to satellite Comms, and have recently started experimenting with APRS. I also picked up a tacticool antenna but I get great coverage with the stock one. I also started using a headset which makes things great for hands free. I can’t stress enough that this is a great radio at an even better pricing that most expensive vhf/uhf radios.
Best, low-cost entry into DMR. Step 1 buy this radio Step 2 backup code plug and calibration stuffs Step 3 obtain OpenGD77 CPS, donor file, firmware Step 4 profit!
there are better radios
If you don't mind voiding your warranty and soldering some wires, you can convert this radio to use M17 and OpenRTX.
Actually the first thing I did when I got this radio is to install OpenGD77 firmware on it. The RT3S with OpenGD77 gives you an amazing DMR experience for less than $100. Most DMR radios cost a lot more than that. With the 3rd party firmware you can store 1 million contacts with minimum characters selected. If you max out the display characters to 50 you can still store 340,000 DMR ID's. If you want the best DMR radio you can get on a budget this is the one.
Use it for our volunteer fire department.
I've owned this radio for several years and have made good use if it. I decided to upgrade to GPS via this offering from Retevis and got more than I expected, but when it comes to Retevis and their firmware have seen across other radio models, like audio recording, more channel capacity, etc. As an amateur operator, I've upgraded the firmware to the OpenGD77 format, and the interface with the GPS functionality of this radio has made it an unparalleled addition to my radio collection. The radio itself is of modest size and the transmitter output matches the spec well. I am looking forward to using this radio for many years. If the hardware is the same quality as the competing product I bought years ago, it will do just fine!
Took a gamble and bought one of these. It works well, but learning to program it is not for a novice. Once I had it figured out, I programmed a number of analog and digital repeaters into the radio and it worked well. It cover all of the ham bands within its operating range as well as commercial frequencies.
I own 2 of these. One with stock firmware and one with openGD77. Both work without issue. But, I do like the openGD77 software. Great audio on RX and TX. No issues with the local repeaters or hotspots I have.
This is my first DMR radio and I love it. I have been a Ham for years and just now have found DMR. This HT has performed great. It is easy to program with the CPS and included programming cable once you get over the learning curve associated with DMR. I use it with both of my hotspots - simplex and duplex - as well as in analog mode with our local 2m and 70cm repeaters. This has become my everyday carry radio.
This is a nice compact and well-built radio with decent transmit power and a relatively good stock antenna
I was looking for an inexpensive DMR/Analog radio to use while hiking, and the RT3s definitely fills that need. Like all of these inexpensive radios, the CPS is clunky. Once you use it for awhile it flows OK, and I have not encountered any big glitches. The need to have Excel installed to import the Radio ID database is a pain, but same for some other brands as well. Radio is solidly made and has endured a good deal of abuse without complaint or issue. I find the audio is very good and the RF performance is at least as good as much more expensive radios. Overall it has more than met my expectations, and I find it easy to use. Especially after customizing the programmable buttons. Sure radios like the Anytone have more features, but if you want a solid basic radio that works well, the RT3S will do the job very well.
