No. The RT29S is an analog radio. If you need digital clarity or an encrypted channel, the RT29D is the right model instead, and we can point you to it. The RT29S gives you two frequency bands, 256 channels, and a screen, which the RT29D does not offer.
UHF tends to work better inside buildings and around steel or concrete. VHF tends to work better across open ground, fields, and wooded sites. Because the RT29S carries both bands in one radio, you can test which one suits your site rather than committing to a single band at purchase.
Dual Watch lets the radio sit on two channels at the same time. A supervisor can stay on the dispatch channel and on the floor channel together, instead of switching back and forth and missing traffic on one of them. You hear the call as it happens, not after the shift.
It depends on where you will use the radios and which frequency you are licensed for. The GMRS version covers UHF 462-467 MHz. The EU version covers VHF 136-174 MHz and UHF 400-480 MHz. The Canada and US version covers VHF 138-174 MHz and UHF 406-430 / 450-470 MHz. Tell us your licence before you order and we will route you to the correct one, because the version cannot be changed after shipping.
No. The LCD and full keypad are fixed features of the RT29S, not options. If a screen is a risk on your site, the screenless RT29D build is the better fit, and we will say so rather than sell you the wrong radio. If you do take the RT29S, the keypad lets you lock out manual changes so the setting stays where you put it.
The RT29S stores 256 channels, and the LCD can show a channel number, a channel name, or the frequency itself. That matters when one radio is shared across several sites: instead of remembering that channel 7 is the loading dock, the screen simply says so.
In most cases, yes. The RT29S is a business and land-mobile radio, not a licence-free FRS device, so operation generally requires a licence suited to the band and country you use it in. The GMRS version calls for a GMRS licence in the United States. Check your local rules before you transmit, and ask us if you are unsure which band you are licensed for.
You are right to ask, and we would rather explain than let the numbers sit unexplained. Output power is measured at 7.5V and differs by band: the VHF side runs higher than the UHF side. Battery runtime depends on how much you transmit, so a figure quoted for continuous talk time is far shorter than one quoted for standby. The radio carries a 3200mAh pack. Ask us for the test conditions behind any specific figure before you base a purchase on it.
The RT29S is compatible with repeaters, and there is a repeater on and off setting in the menu. To talk to radios from another brand, both ends need to match frequency, CTCSS or DCS tone, and bandwidth. If you are replacing a mixed fleet, send us the frequencies you already use and we will tell you whether they line up before you buy.
Man Down raises an alert when the radio stays still for longer than it should, which matters for anyone working alone. The RT29S also carries a one-key SOS alarm and a lone worker setting. If your team patrols empty buildings or works alone on site, these are the features worth checking first.
Use the programming cable and software to write one file, then clone it across the fleet. The full keypad is there for the one-off change on site, not for setting up sixty radios from scratch. If you order a larger quantity we can discuss pre-programming before dispatch, so the radios arrive already on your channels.
