Q1: What is a GMRS repeater?
A1: A GMRS repeater extends the range of a GMRS radio by receiving the signal and retransmitting it at a higher power. Repeaters are typically placed at high points such as towers to maximize coverage.
Q2:Is Retevis NR30S suitable for use on farms?
A2:Yes, the Retevis NR30S is a ruggedized digital walkie-talkie suitable for farm environments. It has a waterproof, dustproof and drop-proof design (IP67 rating) to cope with the harsh weather and complex terrain found on farms.
Q3:What is the communication range of NR30S?
A3:In open farm environments, the NR30S can communicate up to 3-5 kilometers. The actual distance may be affected by terrain, buildings or vegetation cover.
Q4: How does the GMRS repeater channel work?
A4: A repeater tower acts as both a radio receiver and transmitter, receiving low-power signals and transmitting them out at a higher power. This allows users to communicate clearly even when they are miles apart.
Q5: Do I need to program my GMRS radios?
A5: GMRS channels are programmed and ready for use. When you connect a GMRS radio to a repeater, it is an output signal (TX) to you, but an input signal (RX) to the repeater. Similarly, when a repeater transmits a message, it is an output (TX) to the repeater, but an input signal (RX) to the receiving radio.
Q6: How far can a 5 watt GMRS handheld radio transmit?
A6: Depends on the environment in which it is used; in an average city, about 2-3.5 miles, or more if the environment is open.
Q7: Can amateur radio communicate with GMRS?
A7: Yes, amateur radios can receive GMRS transmissions if they can cover the GMRS frequency range. However, GMRS radios cannot legally transmit on amateur radio frequencies and vice versa.
Q8: How much does it cost to install a GMRS repeater?
A8: The basic setup cost to install a home GMRS repeater, such as the Retevis RT97S, is less than $400. This applies to farms, ranches or private estates. Higher-end systems can cost more, depending on the specifications.
The Retevis RT97S is a portable GMRS radio repeater for use as a repeater for extended GMRS handheld radios. It is a compact unit with an LED to alert you when the channel is busy. It has a built-in duplexer. This allows the unit to transmit and receive on the same antenna at the same time. Essentially, the duplexer contains circuitry that isolates the transmitter from the receiver. This way, the radio frequency of the transmitter will not damage the receiver.
