The RT97L is a full-duplex repeater with one receive and one transmit pair, so it relays one channel at a time: group 1 on channel 1 and group 2 on channel 5 would each need their own turn or their own repeater. CTCSS/DCS tones can still separate sub-teams on the same channel so they do not hear each other during routine work.
