FAQ

1. What’s the Difference Between 5W and 25W Power?

The difference in power between 5W and 25W is significant, especially when it comes to communication range. With 5W, communication over long distances may result in weak signals or no reception at all. In contrast, 25W power can significantly improve the signal range, allowing for clearer and more reliable communication over much longer distances. While power plays a crucial role, factors such as antenna height also impact range. In areas where elevation isn’t favorable, increasing the power to 25W helps extend the communication range and overcome obstacles.

2. Is the Actual Output Power Really 25W?

The factory output of the RT97L repeater is between 22W and 25W. However, when the repeater operates with an internal duplexer, some power loss may occur. As a result, the actual output power may range from 15W to 22W depending on the quality, thickness, and length of the feeder cable. While the power might fluctuate a bit, it still ensures solid, reliable performance in most conditions.

3. What’s the Customizable Repeater Frequency Range?

The RT97L allows for customizable frequency settings. You can choose between:

  • UHF: 400-470MHz

  • VHF: 136-174MHz

The offset should be ≥5MHz and ≤12MHz, and frequencies should be programmed within ±200 kHz.

4. How Does Using a Raspberry Pi Enhance RT97L’s Functionality?

The RT97L portable repeater is designed with flexibility in mind. By connecting the repeater to a Raspberry Pi via its DB-9 interface, users can expand the repeater's functions. This allows for easy programming and the ability to customize the repeater to fit specific needs, whether you’re operating in a particular area, enhancing security, or fine-tuning performance.

5. What Is Amp Absorption in TX and RX?

  • Receive Mode Absorption: 180mA
  • Transmit Mode Absorption: 5.5A

6. How is the RT97L Waterproof Even if the Doors Are Uncovered?

The RT97L mobile repeater is rated IP66 waterproof, meaning it can withstand powerful jets of water from all directions. This rating ensures that it performs well even in harsh weather or environments with heavy water flow. However, to ensure optimal performance and longevity, it's always a good idea to install the repeater in a protected location, especially in areas with extreme weather conditions.

7. Does the RT97L Have an Internal Duplexer?

Yes, the RT97L portable repeater comes equipped with an internal duplexer, which is essential for enabling the repeater to work efficiently with an antenna. The duplexer allows the device to handle both transmit and receive signals simultaneously without interference.

8. How Many Channels Does the RT97L Have? And What Does It Mean?

The RT97L is capable of storing 16 different channels, which means it can quickly switch between up to 16 communication frequencies.

9. What is the RT97L's Duty Cycle?

The duty cycle for RT97L repeater is 100%.

10. What’s the difference between RT97S and RT97L?

That main difference between RT97S and RT97L is that RT97L is a 25W high power repeater while RT97S is 10W. And RT97L has the IP66 waterproof certification.

I have the RT97S 5watt version of this and it gets me around 10 miles through the piney woods area of Texas. I would like to see if I get more from the 25Watt version. I use a 9db gain Comet CAF-712EFC Antenna about 30ft up, and with my 50w base it can reach about 50-70miles, so I'm curious to see if it would work the same for a repeater.

So far mine has been working great! Very happy with it. Been testing it with some of the other ranchers so far in heavy woods we have gotten 14 miles south and 12 miles north of me so far.

they work great. I have the S and L. They are easy and work out to 20 miles with my setup

they work ok out of the box.

I mainly use it to extend my home range. Favorite feature is ease of operation.

With the RT97L give us lots of range so we can talk all over our land & the leased land to keep and eye on our cattle and makes our firearms range safer. The kit I got was very easy to set up all I had to do was put the antenna on our 30' tower than plug & play.

Using my Retevis RT97L at my home to cover the general area. The repeater is intuitive and so easy to use.

Good for off-grid emergency comms

I have been testing a 97L here and all looks good so far. Eagerly awaiting the availability of the 97L version of the RepeaterID. Maybe I should offer to beta test one.

I've had my repeater up and running for something like two weeks, no issues. Just installed the RepeaterID unit for it. It's so simple and works great! Added the code to get it to Roger beep and have a custom tone. Works perfect

My system is working great for our ranch & range. I have a 30' tower & Repeater ID on it now. Repeater ID people are awesome with help.

I got my up around 5567 feet and then on a pole 40 foot in the air all on solar I can hit is around 22 miles no problems here in Oregon we use it for emergency and stay in touch with each other

This is my repeater set up so far. The 97L with a Comet high gain antenna hooked up to an emergency power pack. I plan to change that over to a lithium deep cycle battery connected to a solar panel. I am using this repeater as an emergency network for our community. I have passed out HT radios to my elderly neighbors in case they need help during an outage and community members who are the helpful type.
